Animal Conservation

Every day many animals needlessly die because of human action. Animal conservation is where animal societies try to help all different types of species of animals so that they do not become endangered or have to face extinction.

It’s important to me because I love animals and if I do see something terrible happen to animals that is caused by people, I feel terrible. I do not like to see animals suffer.

It should be important to everyone because animals are important to the world! A lot of people have their favorite animal but may not realize that other animals that are endangered or extinct can affect their favorite animal too. That is because of two issues called the food chain and biodiversity. So what I’m saying is that everything is connected somehow.

Here are some major causes of extinction:
Deforestation
Poaching/over hunting/fishing
Pollution
Overpopulation
Climate change
Global warming

Animal extinction is part of nature and nature in parts we can’t control but there is something we can do. We humans are accelerating the force of nature which can do damage to animals all around the world.

DEFORESTATION

Dictionary meaning: Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous forests and woodlands.

What is deforestation doing to our animals?

As the population increases certain companies try to meet the needs of the people for wood and products made from wood. These companies start cutting down entire forests for more and more wood and products that are made from trees. Some companies don’t know that they’re killing millions of animals and their habitats. Other companies do know but don’t care because they want to make money. 12 million hectares of forests get cut down every year - just imagine how many trees get cut down in a year and how many animals die or lose their habitat?

Solutions

1. Educate the companies that may not know what they’re doing to animal’s habitats and how this may affect them.
2. If the companies do know what they’re doing to wild animals then lots of people that love and care about animals need to talk to the governments of the countries where this is happening and tell them what these companies are doing to animals. The idea is for these governments to make laws and regulate the foresting industry.
3. People need to think of what can they use instead of wood. Different materials like metal, plastic or rubber can help reduce the need for wood.

Poaching/Over Hunting/Over Fishing

Dictionary meaning: A person who hunts or fishes illegally on someone else’s land.

What is poaching doing to our animals?

Poaching is killing our animals and leaving the species endangered and with things like deforestation, climate change and pollution these things are accelerating the rate of extinction.

Why do people poach?

People poach because they want to make money. They sell parts of the animals like the fur[skin], tusks and sometimes stuff from inside the body for medicines.

How can we help?

We can help by supporting the big organizations that try to help animals in trouble such as: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ and http://www.greenpeace.com/. We need to go to the governments of the state or country and educate them about what people are doing to animals. The governments can do stuff about it like making new laws or enforcing current laws to punish the people that are poaching. They could probably send more officers into the areas that are getting pounded.

Pollution

Dictionary meaning: Contamination of air, soil or water by the discharges of harmful substances.

What is pollution doing to our animals?

Water pollution: The pollution that is hurting marine animals is the big boats belching out huge barrels of oil. It is also big companies and cities that empty wastes into the oceans, lakes and rivers. It is also individual people that throw through rubbish aimlessly into the lakes and streams.

Air pollution: Most of the pollution is from big giant factories that continuously release pollution into the ecosystem. But it is not only factories that cause pollution it’s also the cars and trucks that we drive everyday! What this kind of pollution does to the animals is that when they breathe in they get all of that pollution in their bodies which is not healthy.

How can we stop from pollution getting to the animals?

Here are two really simple ones, DO NOT LITTER! or you can recycle. Recycling is really easy and when you recycle you will not have as much rubbish. Common, everybody in this world does not need to litter - just throw your rubbish in
the bin! You can also cut down on how much you use your automobile by using public transportation, car pooling, riding a bicycle or walking.

The Rhino

Ok now you got to admit that everybody has to like rhinos, their so unique in every way! To their skin, the horns and their speed. Conservationists say that rhinos like to get very close to people and sense rhino to tend to get close that helps poachers get even closer and kill them.

Did you know?

The name “White Rhinoceros” is actually a mistaken translation of Africa word ‘widje’ which means ‘wide’ and refers to the animal’s mouth.

The White Rhinoceros is a grazing animal. It eats large quantities of grass, like a cow

Its cousin, the Black Rhinoceros, has a more pointed mouth and browses on bushes and leaves.

The Tiger

Have you ever hear the saying that cats have nine lives? Well if it is true the tiger has used up eight of their lives. This big furry animal is disappearing from the wild. The tiger loves to lay down in the hot climate in South East Asia and Indonesia. The tiger is killed by humans that want to sell their beautiful skins and their bones and some body parts for medicines. The food that tigers eat is eliminated by poachers and used for food which leaves less food for the tigers.

Another way the tiger is disappearing from the wild is that humans are moving into the tigers habitats and destroying their homes!!
